Scandent shrubs or climbers, up to 6 m high, entirely glabrous; leaf-bearing branchlets up to 30 cm long, quadrangular to terete. Leaves ovate to oblong or sometimes suborbicular, truncate, rounded, obtuse or subacute at base, acuminate or caudate-acuminate at apex, 5.5 - 12.5 x 3.5 - 5.5 cm, chartaceous; lateral nerves 5 or 6 pairs; petioles 3 - 6 mm long; stipules triangular-subulate to somewhat strongly falcate, ca 1 mm long. Flowers: greenish yellow to reddish, in small groups on up to 5 mm long inflorescences. Male flowers: pedicels 7 – 10 mm long; calyx 5 – 15 mm in diam. Female flowers: pedicels 8 – 18 mm long; calyx 6 - 9 mm in diam. Fruits subglobose, 13 - 15 mm in diam., somewhat fleshy, white or pale yellow; persistent calyx 20 - 22 mm in diam.; segments spathulate-obovate, 6 - 10 x 4 - 8 mm, thin, with prominent venation; seeds strongly hollow on inside, blackish.

Fr. March - April.

Distrib. India: Inland forests as undergrowth at low altitudes. Arunachal Pradesh and Nicobar Islands (Katchal).

Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Lesser Sunda Islands.
