Large woody climbers; branches terete, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Leaves fascicled
at nodes on short branchlets, in the axils of scales, 3-foliolate; leaflets ovate or ovate-lanceolate, lobed or not, usually at base of lateral leaflets, irregularly sharply serrate, usually
glabrous on both surfaces. Flowers large, in axillary fascicles, dull purple; buds ovoid,
acute; pedicels up to 10 cm long, elongating in fruits. Sepals 4, spreading, lanceolate,
long-pointed at apex, more or less villous on both surfaces, purplish inside. Filaments
broadly linear, fringed with long hairs; anthers densely bearded on back. Achenes
broadly ovate, compressed, glabrous, with up to 5 cm long feathery tails.
