Perennial shrubs; young stems and branches pubescent with yellowish brown stellate hairs. Leaves 8 - 13 x 5 - 8 cm, ovate or oblong subcordate at base, obtuse at apex, crenate-serrate or denticulate, densely stellate-velutinous on both surfaces, upper surface dark brown, lower surface yellowish-brown, 5 - 7-nerved at base, middle nerve beneath with an elliptical gland at base petioles 1 - 15 cm long, indumentum like on stem; stipules 4 - 8 mm long, entire or 2 - 3 parted, densely stellate-pubescent, deciduous. Flowers axillary, solitary; pedicels 1 - 15 cm long, stellate-tomentose. Epicalyx segments 8 - 12 x 3 - 5 mm, connate at base, lanceolate to ovate, acute, densely stellate-hairy outside, appressed stellate-hairy inside. Calyx 1 - 1.5 cm across, divided to the middle, lobes 1.6 - 2 x 4 - 6 mm, deltoid, acuminate with one prominent nerve, densely stellate- hairy outside, sparsely appressed with stellate hairs inside, glabrescent except margins and apical portion. Corolla yellow with a purple centre; petals 3 - 5 cm long, densely stellate-pubescent outside, glabrous inside. Staminal column 1.5 - 1.8 cm long, antheriferous throughout. Capsules ca 1 x 1 cm, globose, enclosed within calyx, 10-valved, loculicidally dehiscent, densely stellate-hairy outside, glabrous and glossy inside. Seed 1 in each locule, ca 5 x 3 mm, reniform, ascending, sparsely hairy.

Fl. & Fr. July - March.

Distrib. India: Deccan plateau in scrub forests between 150 and 700 m. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Endemic.
