Trees, glabrous. Leaves alternate, simple, entire or crenate-serrate, reticulate: stipules minute or absent. Flowers small, in axillary, dichotomously branched, corymbose panicles. Sepals 5 - 6, shortly connate at base. Petals 5 - 6, contorted, persistent hardened round the fruit. Stamens 10 - 20, inserted on outer rim of perigynous, annular or cupular disc. Ovary 5 - 6-locular or 10 - 12-locular by false septa, ovules 2 in each locule; styles simple; stigmas capitate-lobed. Capsules oblongoid or conical, coriaceous or woody, septicidal, opening inward. Seeds winged or crowded with a mitriform aril; endosperm fleshy; cotyledons foliaceous.

In Tropical and Subtropical Asia and New Guinea, ca 12 species; one in India.
