Herbs or undershrubs. Leaves alternate, entire. Heads homogamous with all florets bisexual or heterogamous with outer florets female, all fertile or central flroets sterile, subsessile, axillary or leaf opposed. Involucre subcampanulate; involucral bracts many-seriate, imbricate, spinescent. Receptacle flat, naked. Corolla of bisexual flowers tubular, 5-lobed. Anther bases long tailed, bearded. Style arms short, obtuse. Achenes densely silky hairy, ribbed. Pappus feathery, copious.

Tropical and S. Africa, Madagascar and tropical Asia; ca 30 species, one in India.
