Herbs, perennial; stems stout, woody, horizontal. Leaves all radical or on short stem,
simply dentate or pinnatisect; petioles with broad membranous, caducous wings.
Flowers in short terminal racemes with membranous bracts, yellow. Sepals 5. Petals 5.
Stamens 15-numerous, in 3 bundles, alternating with carpels. Carpels usually 3, slightly
coherent along the axis; styles linear, recurved; ovules 2 -
6 or 10 -
20. Follicles dehiscing
irregularly. Seeds with white membranous aril.
Tropical S. & S.E. Asia; ca 10 species, one in India.
