Dioecious; small trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, pinnate. Leaflets opposite, sessile; rachis usually winged. Panicles axillary and terminal. Flowers small, unisexual, bracteate. Calyx 5-lobed. Petals 5, free, longer. than the calyx lobes. Stamens 10, in 2 rows. Disc intrastaminal. Carpels 3, united; ovary 1-loculed, 1-ovuled; styles 3, connate below; stigmas 3. Drupes globdse.

Warm temperate and tropical South America; ca 30 species, 1 cultivated in India.
