Herbs, 25 - 80 cm high, erect or spreading, divaricately branched from base, cottony or glabrous. Basal leaves pinnatifid or pinnate, pubescent, spreading; lobes linear, acute, toothed; cauline sessile; uppermost lanceolate. Heads ca 7 mm across, surrounded by upper leaves, ovoid, lateral and terminal, sessile or peduncled. Involucral bracts ovate, with scarious margins, coriaceous, terminating in long spreading spine with short lateral ones at base. Florets pale purple, glandular, equal. Achenes white, ca 2 mm long. Pappus absent

Europe, W. Asia and China.

Notes. Introduced in most parts of the world.
