Herbs up to 50 cm high; stems glabrous or nearly so, striate. Leaves ovate-elliptic to elliptic acute or obtuse, undulate serrate, 1.5 - 8 x 1 - 6 cm, sparingly pubescent on lower surface, gradually attenuate to a petiole; petioles up to 4 cm long. Heads discoid, subalobose to conical, 6 - 7 mm in diam.; peduncles up to 10 cm long. Involucral bracts biseriate, elliptic-lanceolate, ovate, obtuse, glabrous to sparsely pubescent, 3 - 5 x 1 - 2 mm; Florets bisexual, closely spaced, sometimes outer few sterile; corolla tube less than 1.5 mm long, bulbous at base, 5-lobed, densely pilose within. Style glabrous; stigma lobes flat, densely papillose. Achenes black 2 - 3 x 2 mm, dimorphic, marginal ones trigonous and central ones flattened, strongly margined, margins densely ciliate with long hairs, sparsely pubescent on the surface. Pappus of 2 - 3 stiff awns.

Distrib. India: Cultivated in many parts of the country.

Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, S. America and New Guinea.
