Shrubs, up to 2.5 m high; stems sulcate; internodes up to 3 cm long; spines 1 - 2 cm long, 3-fid, slender, sulcate. Leaves lanceolate to oblanceolate or narrowly obovate, acute-mucronulate at apex, entire, 2 - 6 x 0.5 - 1.3 cm, epapillose; petioles very short. Inflorescences subfascicled, racemose, 4 - 18-flowered; pedicels 8 - 14 mm long; prophylls ca 1 x 0.5 mm. Outer sepals oblong-elliptic, ca 2.5 x 1.5 mm, reddish; inner sepals obovate-elliptic, ca 5 x 4 mm. Petals narrowly oblong-elliptic, cuneate, subentire, 4.5 - 5 x 2 - 3 mm; glands separate, ca 0.8 x 0.2 mm. Stamens ca 4 mm long, produced, shortly apiculate. Ovules 4. Berries ca 9 x 7 mm, bright blue, pruinose, stylose.

Fl. April- May; Fr. June - July.

Distrib. India: 1000 - 1500 m. Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Pakistan and Iran.

Notes. Used in malarial fever, also as a blood purifier.
