Annual herbs, aromatic; stems erect or suberect, sometimes many branched, villous or glandular pubescent. Leaves opposite, occasionally verticillate, margins crenate or serrate, rugose, gland-dotted beneath. Inflorescence spike, raceme or head above or flowers solitary axillary, bracteolate or not. Calyx 5-lobed; lobes imbricate, the uppermost largest, sometimes all enlarged in fruits. Corolla 2-lipped; tube cylindric; throat not plicate; upper lip erect, entire or notched, outside in bud; lower lip 3-lobed, spreading. Stamens 4, didynamous, included; anthers 2-celled; cells separate, stipitate, one anther cell of all or only of the two anterior stamens empty. Carpels connate in 2-celled ovary; ovules many in each chamber; style winged below and dilated at the tip; stigma entire or 2-lamellate. Capsules ovoid, lanceolate or ellipsoid, longitudinally 2-grooved, loculicidally or septicidally 4-valved; seeds many, minute, reticulate or smooth.

Distrib. Australia, China and Indo-Malaysia, c. 15 species (Mabberley, 2017); 7 species in India.
